Out of the 110 submissions received for the Environmental Innovators Programme, eight group finalists were selected to bring to the final. After Scoil Mhuire being crowned the first National winners of this competition last year, we were delighted to make the final for the second year in a row. This year’s entry from L. MacMahon and K. Larrissey (Transition year) looked to tackle the silage effluent problem that happens on many farms in Ireland. Their project looked at the potential of including straw, nuts and hay in the silage pit as a means of soakage and potentially reducing the loss of valuable nutrients and the risk of pollution to the environment. Having done an excellent job in presenting their project to a number of judges, they were delighted to come away with second place. Well done to both students and their teacher Ms. B O’Gorman.
